AISI 4140 is one of the most reliable and versatile alloy steels due to its blend of strength, toughness, and resistance. This grade is primarily engineered for demanding applications such as gears, construction equipment, the manufacturing sector, and so on. This guide will walk you through all aspects and nuances of AISI 4140 grade, such as its composition, applications, physical, mechanical properties, and how HYT metals can help you procure the perfect supply of certified AISI 4140 steel to meet your demands.
What Is AISI 4140 Steel?
With a major component being iron and alloyed with carbon, chromium, molybdenum, and other minor components and impurities, all contribute to AISI 4140 steel’s status as a chromoly steel. This grade is known worldwide for its resistance to corrosion and wear.
This is classified under AISI-SAE system. The “AISI” prefix stands for American Iron and Steel Institute. AISI classification uses a four-digit number to identify steels, where the first two digits denote the alloy type and the last two indicate the carbon content. The digits “41” represents chromium-molybdenum steel category and the number “40” hints at an approximate carbon content of around 0.40%. Grade 4140 also adheres to multiple global standards such as ASTM A29, DIN 1.7225, and EN 42CrMo4, making it an ideal material for processes that exposes components to corrosion, impact and high stress. Depending upon the requirements, AISI 4140 is often supplied in annealed, normalized, or quenched and tempered states.
Chemical Composition of AISI 4140
Each element in 4140 steel serves a different function. Chromium and molybdenum provide the strength and resistance characteristics that this grade is known for. Carbon determines the core hardness, and other elements, such as manganese and silicon, add more toughness and grain structure. Following is the typical chemical composition of AISI 4140 alloy steel:
| Element | Percentage (%) | Function |
| Carbon (C) | 0.38–0.43 | Provides hardness and tensile strength. |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.80–1.10 | Improves wear resistance and hardenability. |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.75–1.00 | Enhances toughness and deoxidation. |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.15–0.25 | Increases strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.15–0.35 | Improves elasticity and strength. |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤0.035 | Should be kept low to prevent brittleness. |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤0.040 | Improves machinability but excess can affect toughness. |

Mechanical and Physical Properties
AISI 4140 displays a perfect blend of tensile strength, ductility, and shock resistance. Standards such as ASTM A322 and DIN EN ISO 683-1 define the ideal limits for mechanical performance. The following values represent typical ranges in quenched and tempered states:
| Property | Range |
| Tensile Strength | 850–1000 MPa |
| Yield Strength | 655–850 MPa |
| Elongation | 15–20% |
| Impact Toughness (Charpy V-Notch) | 35–45 J |
| Hardness | 197–285 HB (annealed), up to 320 HB (Q&T) |
| Modulus of Elasticity | 205 GPa |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
(Note: Values differ with respect to the section size and heat treatment condition. For instance, smaller cross-sections achieve more hardness after quenching, while thicker sections demand careful temperature control to ensure uniformity.)

Heat Treatment and Processing
Heat Treatment and Processing
AISI 4140 responds exceptionally well and promptly to heat treatment. The common processes in heat treatment and processing are as follows:
- Annealing: 4140 is usually annealed at 900℃-950℃ and maintained at this temperature for 1 hour per inch (25.4 mm) of maximum thickness and a minimum of 2 hours. It is then slowly cooled in a furnace. Annealing 4140 can release internal stress, soften and toughen the material, and promote a more uniform grain structure. This induces a soft, machinable structure.
- Normalizing: SAE 4140 steel is generally heated to 850℃-900℃ and then cooled in air. Normalizing cools faster than annealing. By normalizing aisi 4140 steel, a more uniform grain structure can be achieved, improving the mechanical properties of the steel while maintaining a certain toughness.
- Quenching: The quenching process is also an important step for aisi 4140 to obtain high hardness and strength. Generally, the quenching temperature is controlled at 815℃-860℃ or 860℃-880℃, and is maintained until the temperature of the entire part is uniform.
- Tempering: The tempering temperature of 4140 material depends on the required hardness level of the steel, generally 550-700℃, for at least 1 hour, and then air, water or oil cooling.
Note: Higher tempering temperatures improve toughness but reduce hardness, while lower temperatures enhance hardness at the cost of ductility.
Relevant standards: ASTM A29, ASM Heat Treatment Handbook, and ISO 683.

Condition Comparison Table:
| Condition | Typical Hardness (HV) | Property and Application |
| Annealed | 183–210 | Ideal for machining and forming. |
| Normalized | 219–290 | Balanced structure with good mechanical base. |
| Quenched & Tempered | 286–485 | High strength for heavy-duty and fatigue applications. |
Note: 4140 should be preheated to around 200–400°C before welding, maintaining interpass temperatures below 425°C. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) may be required to restore toughness and reduce residual stress.

How AISI 4140 Steel offers Solutions for Challenges faced by industries
Scenario-based examples across the following industries, along with how AISI 4140 is crucial for different processes:
1) Automobile Industry: High fatigue due to constant stress
Primary automobile components like shafts, gears, and rods endure extreme load and stress due to continuous usage of automobiles. This can lead to small cracks in the components that will only grow over time. This is called ‘Fatigue Failure.’ Due to its fine-grained structure and hardenability, AISI 4140 steel can comfortably withstand these stresses. This enables components and parts made out of AISI 4140 steel to operate efficiently even after thousands of running cycles.

2) Aerospace and Defense Industry: Dimensional Stability and Retention
During heat treatments, steel experiences very rapid and varied heating and cooling. Most alloys tend to change shape and dimensions as their internal crystal structures undergo many changes. In aerospace and defense manufacturing, even a micrometer change can make important components unusable. Hence, to ensure precision, AISI 4140 makes the ideal material to be used for components like landing gear, actuators, gun barrels, and more.

3) Heavy equipment and construction machinery: Heavy and Sudden shocks
When heavy-duty machines like excavators, forklifts, and cranes operate a load, they bear sudden and unexpected force changes and heavy shocks. A brittle steel type may crack easily, and a soft one may deform or bend instantly. Due to high tensile strength and controlled flexibility, AISI 4140 can absorb shocks without breaking. This enables heavy equipment to stay strong and reliable, keeping operations running without any hurdles.

4) Energy and Power Generation sector: Constant heating and cooling cycles
In power plants, critical components like turbines, fasteners, reactors, and shafts experience highly fluctuating operating temperatures, pressure differences, and shocks. Materials that break down under these volatile conditions can cause severe downtimes. AISI 4140 is certified to comfortably withstand all of the above conditions and main dimensional stability even under extreme conditions. This makes it the reliable choice for power generation sector components and equipment manufacturing.
